Preparing for your Bikeathon

No matter how frequent or confident a cyclist you are, you should prepare for a Bikeathon challenge in the same way – safety, equipment checks and training.

Safety

Safety is extremely important as all our Bikeathons take place on the open roads. Obeying the Highway Code and always wearing a helmet are simple steps to a safe day out!

“We have provided the first aid cover at Bikeathons for many years. The best advice we can offer is to make sure you are wearing a helmet. Such a simple piece of equipment has saved so many people from suffering serious injury.” Clive James, St John Ambulance.

Equipment

You’ve got your bike, what else do you need? When taking on a cycling challenge, regardless of distance, the right equipment will ensure you are as comfortable and safe as possible.  A helmet is the single most important piece of equipment. Cycling shorts, gloves and base layers will add that extra bit of comfort that will be hugely appreciated after the first few miles.

Training

No matter what distance you are cycling, everyone needs to prepare beforehand. Make sure you go out on your bike regularly before your event to build up your stamina. Ensure you stretch extensively before every ride and then try to increase the distance you are cycling week on week. A little extra effort goes a long way on the day!
